Moving from wills containing provisions in favour of prisoners and testaments dictated by inmates, the author investigates whether and how far imprisonment was a pole of attraction for Pisans’ piety in central and late Middle Ages. Lately, she questions whether and, conversely, how far we can speak of a ‘religiosity’ of prisoners. As it is true that for the period taken into consideration charity to prisoners does not appear among Pisans’ common acts of mercy, it is still true that there are no special devotional attitudes related to the prisoner’s condition. In the wills of the latter, in fact, what emerges is a focus on family affection and solidarity among cellmates..

Eleonora Rava è Honorary Research Fellow presso l’Università di St Andrews (UK). Dopo aver conseguito la laurea in lettere moderne presso l’Università di Pisa e la specializzazione in Studi Medievali e Francescani  presso il Pontificio Ateneo Antonianum, ha concentrato la sua attenzione sull’edizione delle fonti medievali frequentando la Scuola Storica Nazionale per l’edizione delle Fonti Documentarie presso l’Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medioevo e conseguendo il titolo di dottore di ricerca in Scienze del testo presso l’Università di Siena. Ha pubblicato numerosi studi sulla reclusione volontaria, su Raimondo Lullo, sulle fonti francescane e sui testamenti. Ha in corso di pubblicazione il volume In testamento vivere..
